There are quite a few tile based offline mapping apps that should do what you want. Several of my iOS devices have only 8GB of storage. You can get You Need A Map or Scenic Map to fit if you first clear off about 4GB of apps and other files.

BTW I am very happy to hear that someone other than me is using my apps with a 1st gen iPod Touch. I recently purchased an original iPhone and have been testing with that as well. I am hoping to make the next version of my app compatible with the first and second generation devices. I don't think I should maintain backward compatibility beyond this next version because it would mean avoiding use of many of the new features in iOS 4 and 5.GrangerFXhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-1431172830562050812011-10-13T20:57:27.060-07:002011-10-13T20:57:27.060-07:00Won't fit on my iPod 1st Gen 8GB - any chance ...Won't fit on my iPod 1st Gen 8GB - any chance (or way) to spit up the maps so I can get, say New England only? Just got a Dual XGPS at a great price, but its frustrating looking for apps that can run on iOS 3.1.3 (which is the highest I can go).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-19763856101819839672011-05-01T17:31:23.823-07:002011-05-01T17:31:23.823-07:00I verified that the elevation data south of New Or...I verified that the elevation data south of New Orleans is incorrect. This is a bug I had fixed some time ago in the 10 meter data in Scenic Map but was not fixed in the 90 meter data used by You Need A Map. This problem will be corrected in the next update of You Need A Map. Thanks for finding and reporting this problem. -MarkGrangerFXhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-18664450246141836752011-04-27T20:19:35.177-07:002011-04-27T20:19:35.177-07:00Message to GrangerFX: Thank you for the free app,...Message to GrangerFX: Thank you for the free app, "You Need A Map". Please check, though, the accuracy of elevation/altitude data for New Orleans city area. (If I knew how to work with the source of data, I would.) South of Lake Pontchartrain, there are absolutely no hills or hilly terrain. Whatever the source of data being used, it is inaccurate, and as fine a tool your app is, the error in the New Orleans' area map raises the question of whether info on terrain in other regions is also erroneous. Otherwise, thank you for the very useful app.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-346183528639782542011-04-25T11:32:50.692-07:002011-04-25T11:32:50.692-07:00The "You Need A Map" app is free for the...The "You Need A Map" app is free for the month of April. Actually if people keep downloading it at the current rate, I will probably extend the free period for another month. The price of the other apps have not changed. Thanks for making these available!Dennis Rnoreply@blogger.com
