Last August I visited Horseshoe Bend Arizona with my drone and was able to capture this video. The terrain from this location was used for the Scenic Map logo due to its S shape.GrangerFXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-2182826732825008212016-06-02T09:39:00.000-07:002016-06-02T17:06:35.709-07:00Version 1.8.4 Available NowScenic Map and You Need A Map version 1.8.4 is be available for download or update via the App Store. This version is mostly a stability release with fixes for the occasional crashes experienced by some users, jumps in the GPS tracking line, and errors in the map data. The map itself has been updated to the latest version of the Openstreetmap database.

There is one new feature in 1.8.4, the grid overlay:

US Civil Air Patrol Grid in Humboldt County, California

You can enable the grid in the Settings menu. Tap the cog icon and scroll to around the middle of the list and you will find the Grid option with None, Degrees and US CAP choices. Degrees show the latitude/longitude major lines with 15 minute sub steps. US CAP shows the US Civil Air Patrol grid for the continental USA and Alaska.

There is also one feature that has been removed from 1.8.4, iAd support because Apple has discontinued iAds. This means that the stand alone Scenic Map is no longer ad supported. You Need a Map will also gets access to the online maps option as a free feature in 1.8.4.

Unless a serious bug is encountered, 1.8.4 will be the last version that will run on older devices that are not compatible with the latest version of iOS. If you have an original iPad, you will still be able to download version 1.8.4 of the apps even when later versions are released.GrangerFXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-9159848120776749962015-11-18T11:21:00.001-08:002015-11-23T20:33:07.360-08:00Scenic Map 1.8.2 Now AvailableThe 1.8.2 version of the paid Scenic Map apps and You Need A Map is now available for download on the iTunes app store. This version uses Apple's high resolution satellite map data to make the map look amazingly real. To see the satellite maps for yourself, first enable the Online Map option at the top of the Settings menu (tap the cog icon in the toolbar) and then tap preset 2 or 4 in the tab bar.

Here is a slightly extended version of the app preview for Scenic Map Grand Canyon to give you a preview of how the satellite maps look in motion. This video was recorded live from an iPad. There are a few frame drops due to the way the video is recorded but in actual use the animation is perfectly smooth 60 frames per second.

Since this app has no internal map data it is a small fast download. This allows it to be updated more frequently than the apps with offline maps. 1.8 will be coming to all the apps after it has been well tested and all the major bugs have been fixed.

The big new feature is the Satellite Color option. This replaces the Natural Color option when Online Map is enabled (it is always enabled in the Scenic Map app). The satellite image maps are cached just like the vector maps which allows you to use them when offline. They can be combined with the vector features or displayed on their own over the terrain mesh.

There are also new settings menu options to control the size of the cache. You can select 2GB, 4GB, 8GB or Max. Max will use up to 80% of the available storage on your device for the cache. If the cache gets too big, you can either select a smaller cache size or clear it to zero by selecting Clear Cache.

There are new Land Cover and Large Parks options to let you hide these polygon types. This lets you see the terrain or satellite images when driving through areas which would otherwise be solid green due to parks or forests but still see other polygons.

The Terrain setting has an Auto option which only shades the terrain when using the Satellite Color mode and zoomed out. When zoomed in, the satellite images are naturally shaded. When zoomed out, the terrain shading enhances the detail of the satellite images.GrangerFXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-90328132326414304902015-07-12T11:46:00.001-07:002015-07-16T16:54:35.889-07:00Search And Rescue Review

I’ve been utilizing this app as a back up to the onboard navigation equipment. Its helped with identifying names and locations of local landmarks, roads, and popular trails such as the Pacific Crest Trail which is well marked within the app. The only downside to this app is that it requires around 2GB of memory on your device to store the 3D maps. But for what I do, I’m more than willing to give up that space on my phone/ipad for that. It would be nice if maps could be downloaded in sections, like maybe by state or region to take up less space. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because there is always room for improvement. I’d like to see an option that lets you calculate distance between two points. Right now it only has the option to calc distance from present position to your objective. For the price of the app and In-app Purchase, this is the best tool for the SAR community that I’ve used so far. I’ve paired my phone with a Bad Elf GPS Rx’r for better SAT reception when the phones onboard Rx’r just won’t cut it. The app eats up battery quick so when using it for extended searches/Nav, make sure you’ve got an external battery.

-Thanks jpavionics! This type of feedback is what inspires me to continue to develop and improve my apps. You may like the new Scenic Map app which downloads the map data by degree and caches it for use when offline.

To calculate the distance between two points while recording a GPS track, tap the info button to activate the compass rose. Move it to the first point. Tap the Waypoints tab and then tap the + button in the toolbar to create a waypoint. Name it whatever you want. Tap on the gold star next to the new waypoint you just created. It will turn red indicating it is the selected waypoint. Tap on a map preset tab to return to the map. Move the cursor to the second point. The bearing line will now stretch between the selected waypoint and the point under the compass rose at the center of the map. The top info bar will display the range and distance to that point. You can optionally create another waypoint for the second point which will allow you to go back to that point again or mark it as the selected waypoint if you want to find the range and bearing to other points. Don't forget to deselect the waypoint if you want to use your current GPS location as the start of the bearing line again.GrangerFXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-64242930218603712912015-07-10T12:00:00.001-07:002015-07-16T17:00:13.314-07:00Scenic Map 1.7.2 and 1.7.3

Scenic Map 1.7.2 is now released on the iOS the App Store. As the screenshot above shows, you can now choose Stop Recording Track by tapping on the lock icon in the toolbar. This allows you to start tracking, lock the center of the screen to your current location and stop tracking all from the same button.

The other new feature is in-app documentation. This feature was requested by several users so that they can look up how features of the app work even when they are not online. The in-app documentation is still found at the top of the Settings menu (tap on the cog icon in the toolbar and select Help). This feature is only available in iOS 8 and later. It is a snapshot of the online documentation and will be updated automatically when your device is connected to the internet via WiFi. You can now search the documentation for keywords and then step through the results by tapping the Search button on the keyboard. You can still access other online features such as the tutorial videos.

The two finger 3D map tilt gesture has been reversed to match the one in Apple Maps. This may be confusing at first but consistency of gestures among apps is important. Swipe up with two fingers to tilt the map from 2D into 3D mode. Swipe down to tilt the map from 3D into a vertical 2D mode.

Several of the items in the Settings menu have been renamed to make them easier to understand. Manu bugs have been fixed and the Online Map should load faster and more reliably.

Scenic Map Grand Canyon was updated to 1.7.3 to fix the Alternate Roads option which appears when you enable the Online Map (available with an in-app purchase). Otherwise it is identical to 1.7.2.

Scenic Map version 1.7 is beginning a rolling release beginning with Scenic Map Grand Canyon. The big new version of this version is world wide coverage via cached online data. Grand Canyon and You Need A Map will get this feature via an in-app purchase while all other versions get it for free.

The online map data is hosted by Apple using their CloudKit feature introduced in iOS 8.0. The bandwidth and usage of CloudKit will need to be managed so as not to exceed Apple's quotas. This is the reason for the rolling release. Apple gives a larger quota as more people use the data service so the first two apps will be Grand Canyon and You Need A Map which have a very large number of users with relatively few who have the in-app purchase. The rest of the Scenic Map apps will be next as Apple approves them.

There is one more thing: A new app named simply "Scenic Map". Scenic Map only uses the online maps so the download is small, quick and easy. Scenic Map is free and will be supported by iAds. There is an in-app purchase that upgrades all the features to match those of the other Scenic Map apps and also disables the iAds.

About iAds: There is now an option in the Settings which allows iAds to be turned on in any of the Scenic Map apps. It is off by default but if you want to support Scenic Map or are curious about iAds, feel free to turn it on and off as you wish. iAds are disabled and hidden when there is no connection to Apple's servers. This means that if you don't have a cellular data connection or have cellular data disabled there are no ads. I am encouraging Apple to make better use of the iAd bar to present useful information in addition to ads in future versions of iOS.

Other new features of Scenic Map 1.7:

Updated maps with more features, most notably woods and forests are visible in many areas as in the screenshot above.

Multiple track display. You can display one track and when you display a second track the first is no longer hidden automatically. You can display as many tracks as you wish.

Nautical distance and speed units (requested by airline pilots).

Support for iOS8 and iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Seamless worldwide 3D topography maps based on the recently released 30 meter Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data.

Notes:

The Online Maps option is off by default in Scenic Map apps. It is on by default for Grand Canyon and You Need A Map when you buy or restore the in-app purchase.

The Cities Locations search defaults to North America cities. Tap the folder icon in the toolbar and select the area of the world and population size you are looking for.

Online Maps indicates that data is being loaded with the spinner in the top left corner of the status bar. When the spinner stops, the map is fully loaded.

The first time the Online Maps is turned on, it may not redraw the screen after the map has been fully loaded. Just use the zoom in and zoom out icons to force the map to redraw. This bug will be fixed in a minor update and should only occur once.

Up to 2GB of online maps are cached automatically. This size will likely become a user option in a future version however even 2GB is enough to cover a huge area of the world.

Scrolling adds all visible parts of the map to the download requests. The parts of the map closest to the center of the screen are loaded first.

Zooming using the + and - buttons in the toolbar resets the map requests. If you want faster map loading, try zooming in.

Don't try caching the map by zooming all the way out. That only loads the low resolution thumbnails. For best detail, cache the map while zoomed in.

Scenic Map 1.7 is nearing completion and you can try it out early. I am using Apple's TestFlight program to beta test the next major upgrade to Scenic Map before it is released. The big new feature is world wide coverage for every paid version of Scenic Map including You Need A Map when you get the in-app purchase. The map data is streamed from Apple's servers and cached on your iOS device. It is based on Open Street Map and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data. The quality can vary based on the location.

World wide coverage and a smaller app download have been the most requested features from Scenic Map users. There will be a new app called simply "Scenic Map" which will contain no map data at all. Its download size is much smaller but it can cache up to 2GB (currently) of any location you visit. I have been testing the data streaming on my drives across Nevada with some of the worst cellular data coverage in the country and it seems to work well.

If you are interested in testing the Scenic Map app, please send me an email from the account you use for your Apple ID and I will add you to the beta testers. I can add up to 1000 of them so I don't think I will run out. I will watch for crash logs so you don't need to do anything other than use the app. Feedback is welcome of course but I am not planning to add any additional features before release of this version. I am very interested in any serious bugs you run into though.

Please send beta invite requests from your Apple ID email account to: scenicmap@gmail.com

All versions of Scenic Map and You Need A Map are now updated to version 1.6.1 on the iOS App Store.

Scenic Map 1.6.1
In addition to fixing a lot of bugs, 1.6.1 also has a few feature enhancements:

Freeway and highway badges will be much more visible in this version.

You can now set the Track line to Hide, Thin and Wide. Some users prefer the thinner line since it obscures less of the map.

The standard map arrow icon is now used to start tracking and center the map on your current GPS location instead of the old cross hairs icon.

You can now start tracking from the Tracks view. Just tap the arrow in the top right corner.

You Need A Map 1.6.2
This update brings all the small feature enhancements and map updates from Scenic Map 1.6 to You Need A Map.

3D maps are now a free feature of the app.

You can now get all the features of Scenic Map including the BLM Lands overlay and advanced search features as an in-app purchase.

The Openstreetmap data has been getting a lot more detailed over the past year. There are now far more buildings, roads and polygons. The less used US Census maps have been replaced by the extra Openstreetmap details in this version in order to keep the total app size under Apple's 2GB limit.

As always, if you have any trouble with the update, please read the Download Tips section on this site.GrangerFXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-86247624354524677982014-04-23T22:37:00.000-07:002014-05-27T11:02:25.080-07:00Nevada's BLM Land

When Nevada became a state, very little federal land was turned over to the state government. It was all kept as federal BLM land.Much of the remaining land was allocated as US Forestry Service land and military ranges including the famous area 51. Precious little else was left for private property. In the map above, the salmon pink areas are BLM land. Red is military and green is USFS land, national and state parks. Control over the BLM land of Nevada is in the news currently but there are few good maps available online. I used Scenic Map Western USA to create this map by stitching together several screen shots.

This is the big update for the year. I expect a minor bug fix update will follow in the near future.

Here are some of the new features: Searching has been greatly enhanced. The three screen shots above show what happens if you type in (or say) "pizza" to the online Local Search feature. A list of nearby pizza locations appears sorted and colored by distance. Tapping on Chicago Fire brings up a list of options. Tap Route to Location to automatically create a route from the center of the map to that location. If you have GPS centering enabled, it will route from your current location. The view then switches to the map where you can see the new route as a green line as well as the other pizza locations that were found.

You can also perform online searches for any address. If you leave the search field blank, the address at the center of the map will be displayed. You can also search for map features even when you are offline. You can find named roads, streams, points of interest, way points, polygons or pretty much anything that appears on the map. The zoom level of the map is used to control the search area. You can even search for generic feature types such as "road". If more than 100 are found, only the matches closest to the center of the map are displayed.

Of course the City Search feature is still there but now greatly enhanced with many more populated places. You can create routes to any of these features when you are online. The automatic routing uses Apple's mapping services. You can also open the destination point in Maps and get turn by turn directions to that location. This way you can listen to for the turn notifications while you are driving while Scenic Map shows you the way even if you are offline for much of the trip. Routes you create in Scenic Map are stored in the Tracks screen just like your GPS tracks. You can even choose to play a route and get a preview of your journey. You can create as many routes as you like while online and then use them when you are offline. You can even export them to other apps as GPX files.

One of the biggest requested features was a BLM Lands overlay. Scenic Map Western, Central and Alaska have a BLM Lands option that you can turn on in the Settings menu. Please keep in mind that this is a static snap shot of the BLM lands database maintained by the US Department of the Interior shortly before Scenic Map 1.6 was released. I will update the map for major app updates. It is possibly that ownership of land can change between updates so please check with the DOI before making use of the BLM Lands map overlay.

Version 1.6 also includes many other new features, enhancements and bug fixes. The iOS 7 user interface is now supported but backwards compatibility has been maintained back to iOS 5.1.1. You can now display the county outlines and get information about which county is at the center of the map. Track times are now displayed in local time thanks to the new time zone database. You can see these on the Tracks screen or when you play back your past trips. Tracks can be sorted by date, name or distance. Polygons are now sorted by size before they are rendered. This makes smaller features stand out in front of larger ones. Smaller buildings are now more visible. Overall the maps should draw faster and use less memory. All known 1.5 bugs have been fixed.

The Open Street Map data set is constantly being improved and increasing in detail. There are now a vast number of buildings in the map. Due to the increase in data size and in order to keep the app size under the Apple 2 GB limit, the western edge of Central USA and Eastern USA had to be reduced by one degree. There is still 5 or 6 degrees of overlay between maps so you should be able to switch between maps before the edge becomes a problem on long drives.

The Canadian data has also gained a very large number of streams and lakes in the northern regions. For this reason Eastern Canada had to have its western edge reduced by one degree and Central Canada had both its western and eastern edges reduced by one degree. There are still at least 9 degrees of overlap between the Canadian maps.

I hope you like the new version of Scenic Map and use it on your summer trips. There will be an update to You Need A Map as well. I need a bit more time to prepare it. It should be ready by the time the minor update for Scenic Map is released.GrangerFXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-6064424261832208802013-06-05T23:04:00.000-07:002013-06-05T23:04:19.728-07:00Scenic Map Western USA: A short videoThis is a short video I put together using Scenic Map Western USA. This is a minor bug fix version. In addition to fixing all known bugs, it includes an update of the Open Street Map data.

There are two small new features. The names of waypoints are now displayed on the map and other text will no longer cover up the waypoint icons. When you scroll or track off the edge of the map you will be ask if you want to switch to another version of Scenic Map that covers your location if it has been loaded

Waypoint names are now displayed on the map.

There is also a hidden feature you may like. If you tap with three fingers at once on the map, a short string of text is created in the clipboard which represents the map's center location, scale, course and tilt. You can paste this into another app such as Notes. This text is actually a smart app link. Tapping on it will relaunch the version of Scenic Map you were running and return the map to the way it was when you created the text link. You can even put this text onto a web page. For example here is a link to Scenic Map Western USA showing Mt. Saint Helens:

ScenicMapW://view?lat=46.191190&lon=-122.194410&tilt=59.311462&zoom=3.618397&course=24.809677

Copying the link can sometimes take a few tries. I use the three finger tap gesture several times in a row to make sure I have copied the link before I switch into Notes or some other app and paste it in. This is an experimental feature currently and just for fun. Please let me know if you find some good uses for this feature GrangerFXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-25748207993659620102013-02-19T09:36:00.000-08:002013-08-19T17:29:15.591-07:00Scenic Map 1.5 & Canada CoverageScenic Map 1.5 has been released on the App Store!

There are three new apps: Scenic Map Western Canada, Scenic Map Central Canada and Scenic Map Eastern Canada. Using data from Canada's GeoBase and CanVec, these maps have amazing amounts of detail. They include streams, rivers, lakes and glaciers. There are two versions of the roads, one from Open Street Map and the other from GeoBase. You can switch between them in the Settings menu. Great care was taken to merge the features of the various data sources to produce the best possible map.

The new ability to merge data sets was used to improve the quality of the parks and other polygons in all versions of Scenic Map and You Need A Map. In version 1.5 you will see many more parks and other smaller polygon features.

The biggest new feature of version 1.5 is the revised Waypoints screen. You can now tap on a waypoint and get a list of options. You can export the waypoint as GPX and send it to another app or e-mail it. You can send the waypoint directly to Apple's Maps app where you can get directions to that waypoint. There is also a new button in the tool bar that will let you do the same thing with the entire lists of waypoints. You can also access the entire list of waypoints as a GPX file via iTunes on your computer. There is also an organize button in the tool bar of the Waypoints screen. Tap it and you will get the option to sort the waypoints newest to oldest, ascending names, north to south or west to east. You can also reverse the direction by tapping the organize button and selecting the same sort option again.

When the app is first launched, by default the joystick gestures have been disabled. This is because these gestures are unfamiliar and can confuse first time users. The Joystick Gestures can be enabled near the bottom of the Settings menu. The tilt and scale of each preset are now unified. When you modify the tilt or scale of the map in one preset, it now updates all of them. If you prefer a different map tilt and scale for each preset turn off Unified Tilt & Scale near the bottom of the Settings menu.

GPS tracking has been improved for version 1.5. You will notice that the velocity and heading updates more smoothly as you drive. If you have iOS 6 installed, the apps will take advantage of the automatic tracking feature. This turns off the GPS automatically when you have stopped moving for some time. This will save batteries if you forget to stop tracking. If you prefer to manually stop the tracking (by tapping the track being recorded at the top of the Tracks menu and selecting Stop Recording Track) turn off the Automatic Tracking near the bottom of the Settings menu.

Scenic Map and You Need A Map version 1.5 require iOS 5.1. This change was made because first two generations of iPhones and iPod Touches are no longer supported by Apple's XCode development software.

A walk through tutorial of Scenic Map 1.5 has been added to the online documentation. It covers the basic features of the app. GrangerFXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-27822457523441410432012-09-07T13:57:00.001-07:002012-09-12T18:38:02.243-07:00Scenic Map 1.4.3Scenic Map and You Need A Map version 1.4.3 have been released. 1.4.3 has the ability to display an existing track while recording or playing back a new track. The existing track will be displayed as a bright green line while the track you are recording or playing back will be displayed as a white line. You can use this feature to retrace a previous trip or hike.

GPX file import has been improved. It should be compatible with more apps and has its name set to the one saved with the GPX file instead of the name of the GPX file. Multiple tracks in the same GPX file will generate multiple tracks in Scenic Map. Routes are also converted to tracks. It should be possible to create a route in a third party app and then display it in Scenic Map to represent the boundary of a polygon on the map.

The Open Street Map data has been updated. OSM has had a recent change in its license agreement that forced them to delete a small amount of data that was still licensed under the old agreement. You may find areas in the map that are missing roads and other features in this version. You can report these issues on the Open Street Map forums or, better yet, download the Java Open Street Map editor (JOSM) and fix the problems yourself. This is actually quite easy and fun to do and seeing your improvements show up in the map is very rewarding.

In Scenic Map Alaska and You Need A Map the US Census Tiger data has been updated for 2012. This is the best version of the Tiger street map data I have seen. Most of the major highways and freeways have been updated. I also did not notice any small roads set as primary roads in this version. The Tiger data already had more accurate local roads in many areas than Open Street Map but this version makes it usable for primary and secondary roads as well. Open Street Map still has more up to date primary and secondary roads than Tiger. For example Tiger is missing the new ring road around Las Vegas that was completed a few years ago.

A bug that prevented Scenic Map from running on an iPad 2 with iOS 4 has been fixed. As part of this bug fix and to prevent future issues, the Large Map option is now available for all of the more recent iOS devices. This will allow you to opt for a smaller map which renders faster and uses less memory in cases there are any compatibility problems in the future. Some users may also prefer the faster map updates. Large Map defaults to On in the Settings menu. It is near the bottom so you will need to slide the menu upwards to see it.

As always, your reviews of my apps are greatly appreciated. Whenever a new version is posted, the App Store hides the existing reviews by default so a few good reviews would really help after an update.

Special note for owners of the first two generations of iOS Devices (the original iPhone, the iPhone 3g, the first and second generation iPod Touch):
The next version of Scenic Map and You Need A Map will require iOS 5 and will not be compatible with these earliest iOS devices that cannot run it. Apple's development tools no longer support those early devices. In order to support the new iPhone 5, I must use the latest development tools and so must also drop support for those devices. Please back up Scenic Map and You Need A Map version 1.4.3 using iTunes because this is the last version that is compatible with all iOS devices.GrangerFXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-50789279387938745442012-08-19T22:10:00.004-07:002012-08-19T22:11:27.637-07:00Converting Garmin and other track files to GPXA user asked me how to import track data from Garmin Basecamp software into Scenic Map and You Need A Map. It turns out that Garmin's software does not export standard GPX track files so they must be converted first. I located a free app on the web that should do the job. It is called "TCX Converter". It is free and runs on both Mac and Windows. It is able to convert between a large number of track file formats and export them to GPX and other formats. By default it runs in German but you can switch it to English using the language pop-up menu in the top right corner of the main window.
This version fixes the incompatibility with the Verizon iPhone 4.
The GPX track export has been improved for compatibility with other apps such as MotionX GPS.
When editing waypoints, the next button will now loop around all the edit boxes. I made an animation of Mount Saint Helens volcano by simply zooming out in Scenic Map Western USA. I found a trick that lets me zoom in or out while I rotate or move the camera. To do this, first be in joystick mode (touch and hold for two seconds to switch to joystick mode). Next I did a small pinch gesture to begin the zoom. I then can release one finger and use the usual joystick gestures. In this case I gave the map a slow rotation while it zoomed out. I did modify the app slightly to allow it to switch zoom levels during the zoom (this feature will be in the next update of Scenic Map). The original animation was recorded at 30 frames per second and 1024x768 but the iPad renders the same animation at 60 frames per second at 2048x1536. I also reduced the resolution of the animation to fit into 720p for YouTube. The sound track is a clip named Spotter from Ghost In The Shell which was the inspiration for the look and feel of Scenic Map.GrangerFXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-11454263534586321152012-07-04T23:38:00.000-07:002012-07-06T00:00:44.351-07:00Scenic Map Gestures Video Tutorial

I posted a tutorial video on YouTube to demonstrate the gestures in Scenic Map. This video will become part of the online documentation. The frame rate is not as smooth as it would be on an actual iPad. I also recorded the video using an iPad 2 because the retina display of the new iPad has too much detail for a YouTube video. I added white spots to show the actual touch gestures I was using.

Its two biggest features are street names that follow roads and larger faster maps. On the new iPad there is an option that makes the maps four times as big to take advantage of the Retina display. You can now select between four different coordinate formats including UTM. It is now easier to enter Waypoints in any of the coordinate formats. The map data has been updated.

Awesome Product

Just wanted to let you know that Scenic Map
absolutely destroys any other topo map! You should start posting on the
4x4 sites, as the maps are perfect for off roading. I have an FJ
Cruiser and frequently make expeditions into New Mexico’s back country
(Jemez, Gila National Forest, Cabezon Wilderness, etc) and did not feel
that the topo maps that come with my Garmin 3790 are worth the $80 that
Garmin charges for them. They also are not optimized for Garmin
displays, so they look like crap and it’s hard to get the big picture of
the terrain that your in. I was desperate to find a product that would
give me a much more detailed view of the terrain, and BLAM!!! Scenic
maps to the rescue. With these maps, I know can scout from the comfort
of my couch, the routes that I’d like to make runs on. Basically, it’s a
life saver due to the fact, that I know what lies ahead in terms of the
ruggedness of the terrain. Please keep up your outstanding work! I am
really looking forward to new versions/updates! This summer I’m
planning a trip through the Gila National Forest, which will take us
through over 150 miles of forest/fire roads, in the remote back country
and I have never felt more confident in taking on anything that the back
country has in store for me thanks to Scenic Map.
Reviews have a direct impact on the visibility of my apps in the store and let other customers know how they can be used. Write about how you use Scenic Map. Perhaps you are a pilot and like to use Scenic Map to plan your flights or to identify features on the ground. Do you use Scenic Map on drives or let your young navigator use the app to tell you the name and height of distant mountains? Did you write to me with a question about the app and get the answer you needed to install or use Scenic Map? Let other people know your stories. Your honest review will help others decide if this is the right app for them. Please also feel free to mention any features you would like to see improved or added in Scenic Map.

As always if you have questions about Scenic Map, please feel free to send an e-mail to scenicmap@gmail.com. I try to answer them all the same day I receive them. It is much better to send me a question first before you put it into a review.

Several users left reviews for Scenic Map 1.3 which claimed that they had lost the 2D map view. I also prefer the 2D view in some situations and took great care to keep this feature when I added the 3D view in 1.3. You can tilt the map easily between ground level first person views, the 3D view and all the way up to the 2D top down view. Just use a two finger vertical swipe gesture. This is the same gesture used to tilt the map in Google Earth. I have updated the documentation and the 1.3 update notice on the App Store to make this more clear. You can also prevent the map from rotating its heading by using the North Up setting in the Map Style panel (tap the cog icon at the top of the screen and then scroll down the options until you see North Up).

The North Up option and the map tilt are saved for each preset. This means you can have some presets be 2D and others 3D if you wish. The preset buttons, which work like the ones on your car's radio, make it easy to select your map appearance before you leave so you can quickly switch between views on a drive without having to take your eyes off the road. You should never try to change the map settings while driving!GrangerFXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12581894072494872466noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-231707583776024479.post-78919231254024341352011-11-10T11:56:00.000-08:002011-11-10T12:07:00.898-08:00Announcing Scenic Map 1.3

I am pleased to announce that Scenic Map 1.3 has been released to Apple's App Store. This is the culmination of a project that began over 18 years ago with the goal of enable interactive 3D terrain mapping on mobile devices. By combining the power of both the main processor and graphics processor, Scenic Map can now display a very detailed terrain map in 3D with silky smooth animation. Also new in 1.3 is the ability to record, import, export and play back GPS tracks. Each version of Scenic Map includes several pre-recorded tracks which you can play back. For example, in Scenic Map Grand Canyon, you can take a virtual helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon.

The online documentation will be updated to reflect new new features and changes in 1.3. For now, here are some tips to get you started:

All the touch gestures you are used to in Scenic Map still work just as before in version 1.3. New gestures have been added to allow you to move the map in 3D. Most of these are two fingered gestures. A left-right two fingered swipe will rotate the map. An up-down two fingered swipe will tilt the map. You can adjust the tilt all the way from vertical (which is the top down view you are used to in earlier versions of Scenic Map) to horizontal (which is a first person ground level point of view). You can also use two fingers to pinch to zoom or twist to rotate. If you don't want the map to rotate, you can enable the North Up option in the Map Style Panel (tap the cog icon in the tool bar at the top of the screen and scroll down).

The above controls comprise the Standard Mode touch interface. Scenic Map 1.3 also has a new touch interface called Joystick Mode. You can switch modes by touching the screen with one finger and holding position for two seconds. You will see two concentric rings appear around the point you are touching. This indicates that you are now in Joystick Mode. You can return to Standard Mode by performing the same gesture again and see a single ring appear briefly around the point you are touching.

In Joystick Mode, the point you touch the screen becomes the center of a virtual joystick. If you swipe up and down, you will begin to fly over the map forwards or backwards. The more you swipe your finger away from the point you first touched, the faster you will fly over the map. Left and right swipes will cause you to orbit around the point in the center of the map. You can combine these gestures to fly around the terrain much like in a flight simulator. In Joystick Mode, a two fingered swipe will cause you to fly sideways. All the other two fingered gestures also work in Joystick Mode but are spring loaded just like the one fingered gestures.

The new Tracks Panel can be accessed via the triangle (play) icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. You can tap on a track to display options for the track. You can export the track to GPX, email the track as GPX and play the track. When you play a track, you will see a new tool bar at the bottom of the screen. Use these to rewind the track to the beginning, slow down the track, stop playing the track, pause or play the track, speed up the track playback and skip to the end of the track.

To record a new track, just tap the center icon in the tool bar at the top of the screen. From now on your GPS position will be continually tracked. You can also enable Background Tracking in the Map Style Panel (tap the cog icon in the tool bar at the top of the screen and then scroll down). You can stop recording the track by tapping on the track at the top of the Tracks Panel with the big red record dot icon.

If you have any feedback or questions about this version, please feel free to contact us at scenicmap@gmail.com
